As a sentry walks past, groundcrew are pictured working on a Bf 109E-1 of 1/JG 53 at Cherbourg-Ost, August 1940. The true reason for the red band, which replaced the Pik As badge, is thought to have been either an official order to hide the identity of the Geschwader or a personal grudge between senior officers. However, for much of the Battle of Britain, JG 53 carried this red band and only at the end of 1940 was it removed and the Pik As badge reapplied.

This photograph shows Feldwebel Heinrich Höhnisch of 1/JG 53 on his Bf 109 at Rennes in July 1940 – the red band has not yet been applied.
